Monday Math Mail August 25, 2014
Every Monday I plan to write a post intended to update PUHSD math teachers on current events for the district, particularly with math. I will try to summarize past, present and future events for everyone. I’ll also try to include any fun findings from online as well.
Past
Mathematics VIsion Project
Over the last week I’ve been meeting with small groups of teachers to look at curriculum and planning, particularly the MVP materials. I wrote more detail on what was accomplished in these meetings and where you could look for resources in an email on Friday, August 22.
Present
This week we are getting digital files from the Holt materials up into a shared file on the Google Drive. So far Algebra 1 files are loaded. In the next few days Geometry and Algebra 2 will be added as well. Soon these materials will be aligned to the integrated math units so that they can be an added resource for supplement or substitute in the classroom.
Calendar for Math 1B
Current goals for the week also include establishing a rough draft calendar for the Integrated Math 1B course. Both Math 1A and Math 2A have calendars, and now with our district offering semester A and B concurrently, we need to be prepared to plan for each. This calendar will be shared with all teachers, and will reflect gaps and/or redundancies from last years Math 1A students.
Parent Information Night
I also had a conversation with a teacher this morning expressing that we should prepare to discuss shifts in curriculum and math standards in a public forum setting. Facility request forms are being submitted in the morning. Each site would host the Parent Information session shortly after Back to School Night. This would also allow us to advertise for the information night and redirect content and curriculum questions to a more appropriate setting besides Back to School Night. There’s also a possibility for a STEM related club to fundraise through concessions at this event. More information will be coming on this soon.
Future
We still have a lot to get done before the end of the semester. The following are some tasks that are in development and planned for implementation soon.
- Professional Development for Integrated Math 1 and Integrated Math 2 from MVP experts (funding is available so all we need now is to get it scheduled).
- Haiku Page with supplemental resources and practice assessments
- Google+ Community for PUHSD math teachers to communicate across district, share what’s happening in their classrooms, and get connect with others.
- District Benchmark assessment rough drafts for teachers to edit down to final drafts.
Fun Stuff
Twitter is an amazing resource for educational materials. In the last 8 hours I found both of these:

And for those calculus teachers and learners out there, especially those with access to technology (like a PUHSD Scholar+ Chromebook) Check this out:
